Veterans Cycling
Veterans Cycling Cyclists become eligible for veterans status in the year they become 30 for females and 35 for males.Once registered with a veterans club a rider is eligible to race with any of the clubs affiliated with the Australian Veteran Cycling Council (AVCC).
Fees
Fees Annual membership fees are $140 including club membership and insurance cover. Details of the insurance cover can be obtained from the Club Secretary.Race entry fees are usually $10 for graded scratch races Prize money is generally paid for first, second and third places in each race Rules.
Rules
The basic rules of each Eastern Vets race are:- Observance of all state road rules at all times
- An approved helmet, securely fastened, must be worn
- Dangerous riding will not be tolerated
- Bicycle must be in sound mechanical condition (suitable for road racing)
- Entries for races close 15 minutes before start time.
Typical Annual Program
Eastern Vets conducts two seasons of racing:- Summer Season (October to April)
- Winter Season (May to September)
- Scratch races (separate events for A to F grades)
- Handicap races (single race for all grades with slowest riders starting first and fastest last and where all starters ideally finish about the same time.)
- Time trials
- All riders are graded according to ability.
Summer races are generally of 1 hours duration and conducted on a criterium course - a small circuit of approximately 1 km around.
METEC, a driver training facility at Kilsyth is frequently used as a criterium circuit. During the winter season, most races are held on country road venues.
The club obtains police and local government permission to hold all events, as well as providing traffic controllers with the ability to stop traffic, corner stewards to control riders, a mobile phone and first aid kit.
Safety for riders is the prime consideration at all times.
Club championships are held for each season and are run in five year age grades, a standard adopted throughout veteran racing.
